I Thought I Was Afraid of Success.
Looking back, I was afraid of leaving my old identity behind.
For years I thought I was afraid of failing.
Looking back...
Failure was never the problem.
Success was.
I kept starting new things.
I already had a successful gaming YouTube channel.
It paid my bills.
It gave me freedom.
By most standards...
I had already reached the goal I’d spent years chasing.
But something inside me wanted more.
Not more money.
A different life.
So I kept starting new projects.
A business.
A new YouTube channel.
Different ideas.
Something strange kept happening.
Whenever one of them started working...
I deleted it.
Success made me uncomfortable.
One of those channels even had a video go viral.
I should have been excited.
Instead...
I panicked.
Because success wasn’t just giving me another opportunity.
It was asking me to become someone else.
I thought I was a gaming YouTuber.
That sentence sounds harmless.
It wasn’t.
It quietly became my identity.
As long as I believed that...
Every success outside gaming felt like a threat.
Not because it might fail.
Because it might succeed.
If it succeeded...
Who would I be?
We don’t just protect our failures.
We protect our identities.
Sometimes we stay where we are...
Not because we’re afraid of losing.
Because we’re afraid of letting go of the person we’ve spent years becoming.
Even if we’ve already outgrown them.
Looking back
Today I still have my gaming channel.
But I no longer believe that’s who I am.
It’s simply one expression of who I am.
What I actually love is learning.
Communicating.
Writing.
Understanding people.
Gaming was never my identity.
It was simply the first chapter.
Every chapter asks something from us.
Not more effort.
A different version of ourselves.
Sometimes success feels frightening...
Not because of what we’ll gain.
But because of who we’ll have to stop being.
