I Thought Protecting My Success Would Keep Me Successful.
Looking back, growing beyond it was the best thing I could have done.
For years, I had one goal.
Retire my mother.
Every day she came home from work exhausted.
Her back hurt.
Her legs hurt.
Her feet were swollen from standing all day.
As a child, I made her the same promise over and over.
“One day you’ll never have to work again.”
That promise became my reason for building a gaming YouTube channel.
Eventually...
...it worked.
The channel grew.
The income grew.
My mother retired.
I should have felt free.
Instead...
I slowly became stuck.
Success became something to protect.
Every morning looked the same.
Wake up.
Work.
Upload.
Procrastinate.
Repeat.
Whenever I thought about starting something new, I stopped myself.
What if it distracted me from the gaming channel?
What if the income dropped?
What if I risked the freedom I’d worked so hard to create?
So I stayed where I was.
Safe.
Looking back...
I wasn’t protecting my success.
I was protecting my identity.
I believed I was a gaming YouTuber.
Anything outside of that felt dangerous.
Not because it might fail.
Because it might change me.
Then life forced me to stop.
My relationship ended.
My business slowed down.
For the first time in years...
I questioned everything.
Instead of trying to improve the gaming channel...
I decided to improve myself.
I set a ridiculous goal.
I wanted to become the kind of person who could earn far more than I already did.
So I asked a different question.
What would that version of me do today?
He would read.
He would exercise.
He would walk.
He would communicate better.
He wouldn’t spend hours scrolling on his phone.
So I started becoming that person.
Not because those habits directly made me more money.
Because they changed me.
Something unexpected happened.
I started another YouTube channel.
I improved my communication.
I became more creative.
My thinking expanded.
And strangely...
My gaming channel started performing better too.
Not because I spent more time on it.
Because I had become better at everything.
Looking back
I spent years believing my gaming channel was carrying me.
Now I think it was simply the runway.
The runway isn’t the destination.
It’s the place planes leave from.
For a long time I thought staying on the runway was the safest option.
Now I know...
Runways aren’t built for staying.
They’re built for taking off.
